It's that season folks - the Fall Season, Election Season, Holiday Season...all of it! ...and emotions are flying all over the place!
It’s no secret that people around us shape our feelings, and vice versa. But most folks underestimate just how strong that influence is. As social beings, connection and belonging are fundamental. That’s why our brains are wired to learn from others and copy their behavior, which is called social learning.
We even have mirror neurons that fire off when we see someone else doing something, making us want to do it too.
Even more importantly, our brains pick up on other people’s emotions and copy them, which influences how we feel. That’s empathy. Some people are naturally more empathetic than others, and both really high and really low empathy can be unhealthy.
Emotions are contagious. This is incredibly important to understand! You may have noticed that when someone you know is extremely excited, it makes you excited. Alternatively, perhaps you have found that when you talk to someone who is sad, you walk away feeling sad.
A study in Psychological Science showed people faces with happy, angry, or neutral expressions for just 30 milliseconds. You may have seen this before.
Even though they didn’t consciously see the faces, their unconscious minds picked up the emotions. When they saw happy faces, their muscles for smiling became more active. The same thing happened with angry faces. This shows how powerful the impact of people’s emotions can be on our bodies.
Another study found that we’re also influenced by seeing other people’s physical sensations. In the study, people watched videos of hands in hot or cold water. The study found that the participants’ own hand temperatures changed based on what they saw. For example, when they saw someone put their hand in cold water, their own hand got colder. These studies, and many others, show that people around us can influence us at a deep level.
This is why I am passionate about emotional intelligence, but from the perspective of Do you understand the impact of your behavior? Do you understand how you are supposed to process your emotions and manage your behavior, as well as understand those of others and influence their behavior. You cannot manage anyone’s behavior, however you can influence it at work, the home, and in the community.
What is your emotional state doing to influence how others around you react and feel?
Now, let me ask: who is influencing you? Who do you interact with frequently? What emotional state do they tend to be in? Do you see how they are influencing you?
It’s important to understand this at work and in life, because if we’re aware of contagious emotions, we can choose to limit how much we let ourselves be influenced. Once we become conscious of these unconscious, learned reactions by noticing our own and other people’s emotional cues, we have more control.
Plus, knowing how much we influence each other’s emotions, we can choose to have a positive influence on those around us, including setting the emotional tone of our workplace and home by modeling.
